When the work doesn't stop at sunset, the lighting needs to keep up. Anyone who has tried to finish a job by headlight, phone torch or whatever happened to be in the ute knows how quickly the light becomes the thing slowing you down.
Proper worksite lighting is not about throwing the brightest thing you can find at the problem. It is about putting usable light exactly where the work is happening, and keeping it there without someone having to hold a torch.

Why Work Light Is a Different Problem
Driving lights are built to throw a narrow beam a long way down the road. That is the opposite of what you want standing at the back of a ute at 7 pm. Point a spot beam at a toolbox and you get a bright circle, deep shadows around it, and glare straight back at you off anything metal.
Work lighting needs spread rather than reach. A flood or ultra-flood beam pattern covers the whole area you are standing in, so you can see into the tray, across the bench and around your feet at the same time, with both hands still free for the job.
Glare matters just as much. Light that’s too harsh in a confined space is counterproductive: it tightens your pupils, kills your ability to see into shadow, and makes everything outside the beam harder to read.
Task Lighting for Toolboxes, Trays and Tight Spaces
Most trade work after dark happens in small, awkward spaces. Inside a toolbox, under a canopy lid, along a tray, behind a service body door. These spots need light that is close, even and permanently mounted, not something you have to reposition every time you reach for a different tool.
The ROK9 White LED Utility Light suits this job well. It runs a neutral 5000K white across a 90-degree beam angle, which is wide enough to light a whole toolbox interior rather than one corner of it, and at 80 grams it can be mounted almost anywhere without adding meaningful weight. It comes with both flat and tube mounting bases, so it fits a flat panel or clamps to a bar or rack frame straight out of the box.
It is IP67 rated and reverse polarity protected, with a rated LED life of up to 30,000 hours, which for a light that only runs at either end of the working day is a long time between replacements.
Low-Glare Light for Close Work and Early Starts
There are situations where full white light is the wrong call. Early starts in a residential street, night work near occupied buildings, or any job where you need to keep your eyes adjusted to the dark while still being able to see what is in front of you.
The ROK9 Red LED Utility Light covers that gap. Red light preserves your peripheral vision and lets your eyes refocus faster when you look away from the lit area, which matters if you’re moving between a lit work zone and a dark site. It shares the same 80-gram housing, 90-degree beam and IP67 rating as the White, so it mounts identically and can sit alongside one on the same vehicle.
It also attracts the fewest insects of any colour in the range, which is worth knowing for anyone working outdoors through summer.
Lighting the Load Area and the Ground Around the Vehicle
Once you step back from the toolbox, the job changes again. Loading and unloading, working off the back of a tray, or setting up gear beside the vehicle needs coverage across a whole zone rather than a single compartment. This is where trade vehicle lighting earns its place on the build.
The ROK 20 Utility Light - Ultra Flood is the practical starting point. It delivers 643 effective lumens across an ultra-flood pattern from a 13W draw, in a housing that weighs only 270 grams. It is IP69K rated, uses a Deutsch waterproof connector, and carries over, under and reverse voltage protection, which matters on a work vehicle where the electrical system takes a beating.
One practical note: the ROK 20 does not include a wiring harness, so factor that in when you are pricing the install.
Wide-Area Lighting for Bigger Sites and Longer Nights
For larger vehicles, bigger work areas, or jobs that run well into the night, the step up is worth making. Trying to light a full site with lights sized for a toolbox means mounting more of them and still ending up with patchy coverage.
The ROK 40 Ultra Flood LED Utility Light delivers 2342 effective lumens, roughly three and a half times the output of the ROK 20, across the same wide ultra-flood spread. It runs at 24W, drawing 1.8 amps, is IP69K rated, and ships with a wiring harness included.
Both the ROK 20 and ROK 40 run on a 9V to 36V range, so they suit 12V and 24V vehicles without needing anything changed, which is useful across a mixed fleet.
Matching the Light to the Job
For a typical trade vehicle, the sensible build looks like this:
-
Toolboxes, trays and canopy interiors: ROK9 White, for even, close-range task light in confined spaces.
-
Close work with reduced glare: ROK9 Red, for early starts and keeping your night vision intact.
-
Load areas and the ground beside the vehicle: ROK 20 Ultra Flood, for broad coverage from a compact housing.
-
Larger sites and extended night work: ROK 40 Ultra Flood, for high output across a wide area, harness included.
Building a Setup That Works Every Shift
The advantage of building this out properly is that the light is already in position before you need it. You switch it on, and the area you are working in is lit, at whatever hour the job happens to run to.
It is also the same outdoor vehicle lighting logic worth applying across the whole vehicle rather than one compartment at a time. Once you start choosing lights by the job they do rather than by how bright they claim to be, specifying the rest of the fit-out gets considerably simpler.
