Where it began

Born from a need to see further

As a teenager in Cleve, South Australia, Dr Raymond "Ray" Dennis spent his weekends hunting rabbits and foxes. His long-range equipment could reach further than the spotlights of the day could light. Unable to find a durable, powerful light that met his needs, Ray decided to build one himself.

The first challenge was to create a light that allowed me to see further.

Our journey

The Lightforce story

From a backyard shed in Cleve to stockists in more than 50 countries, these are the moments that shaped Lightforce.

  1. The early years

A spotlight built in the backyard shed

Ray's first spotlights were handmade with aluminium handles, Lucas automotive reflectors and quartz-halogen bulbs. Family and friends helped produce them in small numbers, but every light demanded many hours of work.

The operation grew through the versatility of its people. Family members and staff assembled lights, answered calls and supported retailers. At one stage, up to 16 people were helping move the organisation forward.

  2. The breakthrough

Changing what a spotlight could be

While studying dentistry, Ray searched for a better way to manufacture. Plastic injection moulding led to a lightweight handheld spotlight made from polycarbonate and engineering-grade materials, what Lightforce believes was the world's first plastic spotlight created for sporting and hunting use.

  3. A new chapter

A new home. A name for the future.

As the operation outgrew Cleve, manufacturing moved to Adelaide. The original Kudin Products business had become R.L. Dennis Manufacturing, and Ray wanted a name that represented the products, the people behind them and the future ahead. That name was Lightforce.

  4. Late 1980s–1990s

    One platform. More possibilities.

Plastic construction enabled faster manufacturing and an expanding modular range. Different reflector sizes, bulb combinations and coloured filters gave professionals and sporting enthusiasts the right beam for the task.

  5. Mid-to-late 1990s

    A new road forward

As Australia's sporting-light market changed, Lightforce adapted its proven polymer lighting technology for vehicles. Within a few years, its plastic driving lights became a powerful presence in a market long led by traditional glass and metal products.

  6. 2000s

Made in Australia. Proven in the outback.

Improved optics, HID technology and resilient housings carried Lightforce driving lights into a new generation. They were demonstrated in some of Australia's toughest conditions, including the 2008 Australian Outback Challenge.

  7. 2010s–today

    The next generation of performance

LED technology created new possibilities for efficiency, output and durability. Genesis, Striker, HTX2, ROK and BEAST continue a design journey that began with one simple purpose: putting useful light exactly where it's needed.
